The historic Glenfinnan viaduct in north western Scotland is in need of urgent concrete structure repairs. New Civil Engineer (NCE) reports that the familiar landmark has a range of structural defects, including cracks and fractures in the arches.
Network Rail, who are responsible for carrying out the repairs have applied to the Highland Council for listed building consent. The 122 year old structure is recognisable to millions of people around the world for featuring in the Harry Potter film franchise. It is a popular tourist destination as fans enjoy the scenic rail route of the Hogwarts Express.
Scotland’s Railway director of engineering and asset management Alan Ross said: “The viaduct is an iconic landmark which attracts visitors from across the world, so we’ve worked hard to develop a solution which protects the structure while minimising the visual impact of our work.”
He added: “We explored a range of options to address the repair and the bracket we will install offers the best technical and visual solution that can be delivered in a way that will not disrupt passenger services on the line.”
The Glenfinnan Viaduct is the longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland, with a span of 381m encompassing 21 spans. The Robert McAlpine designed bridge is a Grade A listed structure, meaning that permission is needed for any alterations, including essential repair work.
A full refurbishment plan for the viaduct is due in 2024, but in the meantime urgent temporary works need to be put in place in order to protect the integrity of the structure.
