Rutland Bridge is set to close for the next three weeks, after a lorry collision caused significant damage to the structure.
Last Saturday (November 5th), a vehicle carrying a heavy load hit Fosters Bridge in Ketton, Rutland, before 0800.
The bridge, which crosses the A6121 and is used for trains between Leicester and Peterborough, now needs to have parts replaced before it is safe to use again.
East Midlands route director for Network Rail Gary Walsh stated: “Our teams are doing all they can to carry out these extensive repairs quickly and get trains moving safely again.”
He apologised for the disruption to passengers, and urged them to leave extra time for their journeys. A bus replacement service for all train services between Leicester and Peterborough has been put in place from Tuesday.
Trains between Birmingham and Leicester will be able to operate, while there will be one train an hour between Peterborough and Cambridge.
John Robson, regional director for East Midlands and East Anglia for CrossCountry, reminded passengers to check the website for more information about the services that are running.
Although engineers have started work on the structure, it is thought they will not be finished for another three weeks.
This comes after work to repair swing bridges in Norfolk and Suffolk have finished. The structures, which are more than 100 years old, had parts replaced, as they had become unreliable. This means the bridges will be at less risk of developing faults.
Network Rail stated this work will make journeys more efficient for Greater Anglia train users.
