Located in West London’s Park Royal campus, the LD9 building is home to one of Europe’s largest Equinix International Business Exchange™ (IBX) data centres.
Principal contractor HR Facilities enlisted Freyssinet to undertake alterations to the concrete ground slab to enable the construction of a new scissor lift system. The existing slabs needed to be broken out in order to create a new concrete slab before the installation of the scissor lift frame.
As works took place in an operational building, special measures were taken to mitigate noise and dust and to protect members of the public working in the building.
The scope of work included:
- Temporary protection to capture dust and noise
- Removal of the temporary floor
- Breaking out of the concrete, including slab cutting and coring
- Steel reinforcement installation
- Concrete reinstatement of the slab
Concrete demolition was carried out using a combination of tools, including a concrete chainsaw and coring to minimise noise and vibration inside the building. An exclusion zone was set up with a pedestrian barrier, and a plastic enclosure was erected to mitigate the dust created. The new concrete was then pumped from outside and delivered into the building in a safe manner.
The works were completed in one phase over three weeks, with no impact on the building, which remained open and operational during the works.
