A bridge linking Cheltenham to Gloucester is set to close for essential repairs & motorists are being warned about a year of diversions along the key route.
A bridge linking Cheltenham to Gloucester over the M5 motorway is set to close for essential repairs and maintenance, but motorists are being warned about a year of diversions along the key route.
The bridge at Staverton on the B4634 Gloucester Road, crossing the M5 between junctions 10 and 11, will be closed from Monday 13 August 2020 until August 2021, according to Gloucestershire Live.
The essential work on the bridge will include concrete strengthening and repairs, replacing the waterproof barrier, new fencing, and resurfacing the carriageway deck, aiming to keep the bridge operational for many years to come.
There will be traffic diversions in place to the northeast of the bridge via the B4634 and A4019, and also on the B4063 and A40 to the south-west. The work has been contracted out by Highways England, the government body responsible for modernising, maintaining, and operating England’s motorways and major A roads.
Mark Collins, the project manager for Highways England in the South West, said: “These repair works on the Staverton overbridge are taking place to allow smoother journeys for motorists and to protect the bridge for years to come.
“We appreciate that the closure will affect journey times and I want to thank drivers and pedestrians for their patience while we carry out these vital improvements.”
All the planned roadworks are subject to changes in the weather conditions, as well as any unforeseen circumstances, and the maintenance works aim to keep disruptions to a minimum.
