The A682 Centenary Viaduct is a seven span bridge which takes traffic through the centre of Burnley. Built in 1967, it comprises two adjacent concrete post-tensioned decks and is 193m long and 22m wide.
The viaduct was assessed as having a very restricted load capacity and consequently a restriction on vehicles with abnormal loads was implemented. Without significant works to the structure, a restriction on all HGVs was going to be required.
The Centenary Way Viaduct Refurbishment NEC3 scheme, promoted by Lancashire County Council, proposed a number of bridge repairs, including bearing replacement, concrete repairs, expansion joint replacement and deck waterproofing.
Freyssinet was appointed to design, supply and install new expansion joints to both sides of the viaduct and design, manufacture and supply bridge bearings.
After removing the existing joint, Freyssinet’s in-house hydrodemolition team Aquaforce removed the surrounding concrete, before installing WP100 type 7 expansion joints. The WP100 joint is durable, easily maintained and suitable for heavy traffic. It was selected to suit the application and specification of the project and was designed by Freyssinet to fit over the existing recess and drain arrangement.
